Dévier <French meaning Deviate>
Deviate <adjective> characterized by deviation or departure from an accepted norm or standard
All women wear lingerie; not all realize or appreciate it. The description of lingerie typically refers to undergarments., i.e. bra, underwear. When I think of lingerie, I think of any garment that makes you feel sexy, whether it’s being seen by the general public or not.
In the 1980’s, I was first introduced to intimates at an adult product home party. Shy and embarrassed, I blushed as I purchased my first outfit. At the time, I thought lingerie was reserved for the bedroom and one certainly did not display it. Fredericks of Hollywood style was the hottest trend of lace and silk, and often only featured in gentlemen's magazines. Thanks to Victoria’s Secret and 80s pop stars, they would catapult sexy wear into the mainstream and help it grow to a billion dollar industry.
By the time the 2000’s were here, I was a mom of three, and not into sexuality at all! Weight fluctuations, a stressful job and bored in the bedroom was my life. In my marriage, mothers were not supposed to be sensual, nor were ‘good girls’ supposed to experiment with sex toys.
Who knew that something so insignificant as a gift of lace panties, would renew my confidence and start my journey of self awareness and inspiration. My motto, “sexy is a state of mind, not a body size”, was born. Initially, I would wear something sexy under sweatpants and baggy shirts, hidden from the rest of the world; my little secret. Somehow it made me feel better. I felt sexier. I felt like I wanted to make some positive changes and get out of the rut I was in: I bought more. What started as an infatuation with sexy underwear, became an obsession with lace bras, and peek-a-boo tanks. It was exhilarating! Feeling better about myself also gave me the courage to leave my old, tired life (and marriage) behind; to move upwards and live a life where sexuality was not a sin.
At the time, options for large women were limited. Cute sets were a hit as long as you were a size 8 and had breasts smaller than a D cup. Larger women were stuck with thick bras in beige tones, thigh Highs were out of the question and lingerie felt more like sheer boxy moo moo’s that covered curves rather than enhanced them. We were limited!
After so many years of slowly coming out of the shadows and embracing eroticism, I finally had the chance to make my love of sexual products a reality. I was given the opportunity to open my own business: a woman owned boutique for lingerie and sex toys. I knew I wanted to offer not only hand chosen quality, but also a large range of sizes, helping women (and men) of all shapes feel beautiful about themselves. I wanted a place to talk about toys; not as forbidden objects, but rather as enhancement products. To ‘deviate’ from the normal selections and offer products that I could feel passionate about. Finally, in 2013, Dévier Boutique was created.
